The ABC of an HIV test

I recently attended the New Start event on campus with a photographer to show students how easy it is to get a test that may very well save your life.
After being told our cameras were not allowed in the tents and the testing area I had to call in a SHARC representative as back up to negotiate with the New Start staff to allow the reporter to be photographed while being tested. Privacy is very heavily protected and respected by the New Start staff and this is one of the reasons why HIV tests are becoming more popular.
There are some simple steps in the process of taking an HIV test which I went through:
1. After filling in the relevant paperwork I was led to a private tent for pre-testing counselling and where our photographer was not permitted entry.
2. In the tent, my counsellor asked me various questions which although uncomfortable, such as asking for intimate details on my sex life, were absolutely necessary to make sure I was not putting myself at risk in terms of my sexual activities.
3. After counselling I received my information card that would be exchanged later on for my results
4. We came back the next day due to time constraints where I had my blood tests. New Start takes two tests so as to rule out false results
5. I was then led to the counselling tent for post-test counselling and my results
The New Start area in Eden Grove was very quiet and despite all the effort New Start took to come to Rhodes, very little students attended the testing drive. As young students we should all empower ourselves and get tested. No one has to know your results except you but once you know your status you can live your life safely whether you test positive or not!
