i just think that because this is such a small university it is so much easier to assume that there is a high level of alcohol consumption wereas it would not be as easy to point out the same problem in bigger universities because there isnt the same concentration ...plus i just feel like people need to leave us students alone, whats it to you honestly? besides the fact that its a personal choice and as hard as the students may try, we are ultimately free to do what ever we choose to do and there is nothing no one can do about it, this topic is seriously getting old and fast. Its things like this that give us as rhodes students such a bad name.

As an ex Rhodents my self,I can safely say that indeed there is a high rate of imbibing the water of mortality in this university. In comparison with UKZN,rhodes is found in a small town and the population of the university student is way too small compared to other universities around Mzansi, but the ratio of people drinking alcohol is shocking. Almost two thirds of the university is drinking. Recently i went there to visit my friends I was shocked to see two first year ladies drunk like nobody 's business. I asked them what are they studying? they couldn't even tell me the way she was drunk, indeed there is a problem with alcohol consumption at rhodes university.

From my experiences at Rhodes and other tertiary institutions in South Africa, I, unfortunately, arrive at the conclusion that Rhodes University has the highest percentage of Alcohol drinkers and alcoholics. Never have I seen before at any other intstitution where students drink on a regular basis.

This indeed has a negative effect both on the academic and social life of students, as well as the reputation of the university and its administration when it comes to dealing with such issues.

My opinion is that the Rhodes University administration and SA government should lay down stricter laws with regards to the sale and consumptiion of alcohol. Perhaps intoducing hefty fines to those responsible for abuse and those reponsible for the sale of alcohol.

Without no doubt, the pubs and alcohol dens are also responsible for students drinking alcohol and abusing it on such a large scale.

Learning and knowledge is something that has to be actively sought. One cannot stumble upon a degree, nor upon understanding. Those who simply wish to drink and do nothing else hardly ever pass first year. Therefore those who waste their time here are not worried about for long. Those who have a problem with the law around the times that alcohol can be sold will simply have to have house parties.

If people are worried about the exam results and the quality of work produced by students, then do not blame alcohol. For those who did badly: blame the older students on sloppy work, and the new students on the excuse for an education system that the government has implicated.

I don't think that Rhodes students drink any more than any other students. Students drink excessively all around the world and the worst thing you could do is tell them not to! I understand the Universities efforts to encourage responsible drinking but I dont think it should be the University's responsibility to do so. The students who come to university are adults and adults should be able to make their own desicions. It may take a few bumps on the head before students become educated and well behaved members of society but these are lessons they can only learn through their own actions and their own mistakes. Let them be!
