The Latest Movies: hot or not?

By Lisa Brigham

THE ORPHAN

Horror

* * *

Gave this film a ’3 star’ because even though it definitely gave us the right amount of scream factor it didn’t break away from the ‘scary movie’ mould as much as we’d like it to have done.

You should watch the movie because it does have a twist in the story line but don’t expect great things in terms of creepy sci-fi themes or spooky supernatural concepts. If you liked The Ring series then you’ll enjoy this.

From incest to psyco-mania this film really involves a lot of uneasy sub themes so take a friend to hold your hand and tell you “it’s all going to be alright” afterwards.

MY SISTER’S KEEPER

Drama

*** ½

We rated this film a bit lower than other critics because it wasn’t as great as the reviews said it was going to be.

If you like crying your eyes out or are fascinated by how families cope under pressure then this is definitely a film for you.

We cried when the characters were sad, when they were happy and when they were just acting like normal people (that is a LOT of crying!)

Cameron Diaz comes out of her ‘pretty blonde’ role and really gives the performance of a life time alongside Little Miss Sunshine starlet Abigail Breslin who really gives quite an act herself .

DISTRICT 9

Sci-fi/ Alternate Reality

*****

We gave this film an all out great rating because it’s a truly superb South African movie from the production to the plot and beyond!

Never before has a film goer been exposed to so many ideas at once: social interaction, South African politics, transformers meets iron man and aliens!

The film is totally original and is the best movie I’ve seen in years, and that’s saying something! See it on the big screen and you’ll really appreciate the special effects and view South African produced movies in a whole new light!

G.I. JOE

Boy Action

*** ½

As a girl I wasn’t expecting much from this movie and went to watch for a merry distraction, a movie free of girly emotion to watch simply for the sake of wasting time.

I wasn’t wrong but I enjoyed the movie much more than I anticipated. Although some of the ‘fighting’ scenes go on a bit long, there is nothing better than watching full grown men bouncing around in futuristic military suits and saying funny things at just the right time.

Go watch it if you enjoyed the cartoons as a kid but also if you just love how hot Tatum Channing is!
